The Difference Between Photoshop and Illustrator

Photoshop has dominated the graphic design world since its launch and is the number one software for digital artist. Illustrator, another graphic software by Adobe is also a popular program used by designers. Designers may find it difficult to differentiate between the two because of the similar purpose and user interface of both the graphic designing tools. So what is the difference between the Photoshop and Illustrator? When should you use which? We have tried to answer this dilemma below.

1) The Older Brother

Photoshop was launched back in 1987 as compared to Illustrator which came into the market in 1990. Comparing the both it is self-explanatory, Photoshop is indeed the bigger brother and has been in the market longer than Illustrator. Hence Photoshop has had more time to grow onto people. This is one of the reasons why Photoshop is more popular.

2) First Impression is Last Impression

When the first version of Illustrator rolled out, Photoshop was already there and people were already accustomed to it. Illustrator did not succeed in making its mark in the graphic design world.

While Photoshop has a pixel-bases build Adobe Illustrator uses algorithms to produce vector based graphics. This means that Illustrator can be used to make images from scratch but it is not much help when it comes to editing images that have already been created. Thank god we have Photoshop for that which would be the completely opposite twin brother in this case. People like photographers who take pictures and add some effects and finishing touched to their pictures in Adobe Photoshop. People who use Adobe Illustrator are usually Designers, they have to design and create images from scratch and this is done best in Illustrator rather than Photoshop. Although this may seem difficult to understand when you keep in mind that the interface and the user experience is pretty much the same. Then again the world works in strange ways.

5) Clarity and Sharpness

The clarity and sharpness of both the graphic editing software can be testing when you zoom in and out of an image. While Photoshop gives in around 300% zoom where things start to get blurry and messed up, Illustrator does a better job and can go up to a staggering 900% zoom. That is three time what Photoshop can manage.

6) Flexibility to Multitask

While Photoshop allows you to work on a single canvas Illustrator is much more flexible and allows you to work on multiple boards simultaneously. In a way then Illustrator provides more flexibility when it comes to productivity and multitasking.

7) Masking

While Photoshop allows you to mask below the object, Adobe Illustrator which is the opposite twin allows you to mask above the object.

8) Selection Orientation
